Bringing Out the Best in Each Student with Differentiated Learning

We all know that each child has their own unique skills, backgrounds and interests. To bring out the best in each student, differentiated learning programs are designed to account for diverse learning needs and preferences, and to encourage educators to meet students where they are, rather than treating all of these varied minds the same way.
Embracing Differentiation
While implementing differentiation in the classroom offers many benefits, it can also present challenges. For instance, teachers might wonder how they can determine the best way to encourage children to communicate their learning styles and preferences without the pressure to model the stereotypical image they associate with a “good” student. With a differentiated learning program, such challenges are addressed by presenting students with the same concepts and goals, but offering them the freedom to approach those concepts and reach those goals in the ways that are most effective for them.
Rather than completely reworking each assignment for every individual student, implementing a differentiated curriculum allows teachers to assign appropriate tasks and provide varied ways to complete them. This gives students a chance to express skills they’ve mastered and work on those they struggle with, all at a comfortable pace.
By allowing for various paths to the same goal, students are provided an equitable experience for learning. This contributes to setting students up for success.
Inspiring All Learners
Delivering information differently to cater to various learners and supporting multiple methods of expression can inspire children who are not able to showcase their full potential in conventional ways.
In addition to prioritizing differentiation within lesson plans, making simple changes to classroom rules and resources can be helpful too. For example, learning the different ways in which students practice good listening, providing strategies or fidget toys for restless thinkers or allowing kids to move around during a lesson can make a significant difference — especially for neurodivergent students.
We must provide children with opportunities to learn in the ways that are most effective for them, and encourage them to advocate for their unique needs in the classroom. Here at the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF), our education team sees the importance of providing curricula for all our education programs that are designed to support diverse learners. This is why our all-new 2022 Camp Invention® program, Explore, embraces differentiation and provides the appropriate level of challenge for a wide range of children.
