The Importance of Empathy in Design Thinking

This inspiring, hands-on workshop on Saturday, April 13 from 11 a.m. to noon EST focuses on the role of empathy in design and will equip you with powerful strategies to promote design thinking in your classroom.

When engineers create a new design, they must think through problems from various perspectives and identify the best solutions. They also need to employ empathy, or the ability to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, as they create solutions. You can guide your students to apply these same principles as they consider the needs of others. As you create and innovate to develop a solution to a challenge, you’ll explore strategies to engage your students in the classroom, across all content areas.

During this interactive online workshop, you will:

  • Learn strategies for implementing a design thinking process
  • Engage in a hands-on learning experience where you will brainstorm, create and innovate using materials you’ve gathered (a list of items will be provided)
  • Discover how you can empower your students to embrace failure as they make their thinking visible through prototyping
  • Gain insights from National Inventors Hall of Fame® Inductees, who are experts on the importance of empathy in innovation

  • A Certificate of Completion will be emailed at the conclusion of the workshop and may be submitted for professional learning credits*
