Explore Engineering in Camp Invention’s DIY Orbot

How much would your child love the opportunity to work on their very own remote-controlled robot? This summer’s Supercharged™ Camp Invention® program will give your child the chance to explore frequency, circuit boards, motors and gears as they use real tools to reverse engineer a DIY Orbot™. They’ll adapt their bot to perform increasingly challenging tasks, from playing sports to creating art, all while building important skills like design thinking and creative problem solving.

Read on to learn more about what your child can look forward to in DIY Orbot one of four exciting modules at this year’s Camp Invention!

Enjoying Hands-On Activities

The DIY Orbot module is designed to help children build confidence and STEM competency as they earn special certifications through a series of fun, hands-on challenges. First, your child will use their design skills to dream up and build their own personalized DIY Orbot to earn their Designer certification. When they take apart their bot to explore its mechanics, they’ll earn the title of Mechanic, and by transforming their DIY Orbot into a bot-dozer to knock down towers, they’ll become a certified Construction Manager.

In addition to promoting STEM concepts, this module’s activities incorporate sports and the arts. Your child will prepare their DIY Orbot to play a game of soccer, train the bot to hold a marker and create a masterpiece, and team up to choreograph a synchronized bot dance routine, earning their certification as a Personal Trainer, Artist and Choreographer.

Your child’s week at Camp Invention will conclude with the ultimate challenge — the Ring of Fire Final Arena! Each of our campers will be proud to earn a Bot Badge for successfully testing, observing and modifying their DIY Orbot.

Learning Lessons from Great Inventors

Research tells us that when children are exposed to innovation from a young age, they are more likely to become innovative adults. Only the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) can provide your child program curriculum that is directly influenced by the world’ greatest innovators.

In this summer’s DIY Orbot module, participants will be introduced to NIHF Inductees including Howard Jones, Hedy Lamarr, Irwin Jacobs and Andrew Viterbi. They will also hear from NIHF Inductee Ching Wan Tang, co-inventor of the Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED), who will share with them the keys to scientific discovery — experimentation and observation.

Taking the Fun Home

Your child will be thrilled to bring home their customized DIY Orbot at the end of their week at Camp Invention! Plus, they’ll get to take home a bridge or tunnel obstacle they can use to challenge the maneuverability of their robot, as well as their DIY Orbot trading card, complete with stickers for each of the certifications they will have earned through the week.
