Want to Explore Art and Science? Join Us in NIHF’s The Attic!

Behind the NIHF Scenes Program Highlights

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our education team, each year children have the chance to enjoy an all-new experience at Camp Invention®, the K-6 summer STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program from the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF). Our program development and piloting process ensures that each summer offers fun and engaging activities crafted to inspire young creators and innovators.

NIHF’s The Attic is one of four action-packed activities in our brand-new 2022 Camp Invention program, Explore! Read below to discover what budding artists like your child can look forward to this summer.

Spin Into The Attic

Did you know that materials science and chemistry are critical to art and design? The Attic experience combines STEM with art to show campers how the concepts relate, and then they apply their discoveries as they create stylish shoe designs and build their own Arty Bot to help them make awesome spin art!

Throughout the week campers are challenged to solve riddles to discover inventions that have transformed the way people create. To protect their artistic creations, campers also learn about the power of intellectual property and the essential role it plays in designers and other artists and creators safely bringing their work to market.

Each hands-on experience in NIHF’s The Attic follows a “create, test and recreate” learning approach and challenges children to experiment with different types of materials to use in their creations. This helps children build their confidence as creators who can use trial and error to produce work that will make them proud.

See the Innovation Mindset Difference

All Camp Invention activities help kids build the Innovation Mindset: a collection of nine skills and traits that have been shown to unlock creative potential. Developed in collaboration with our revolutionary NIHF Inductees, children can use and benefit from this mindset throughout their lives.

NIHF’s The Attic highlights the following aspects of the Innovation Mindset:

Design Thinking: Within the STEM subjects, the ability to adapt strategies to overcome unexpected challenges is of critical importance. In this activity, children are able to practice this skill by modifying their designs and artistic creations over time to meet different requirements or simply improve their work.

Confidence: Each time a camper completes a challenge or creates a unique work of art, they have the opportunity to build their confidence and identify as creative innovators who can change the world. Because Camp Invention provides an inclusive and supportive environment where participants feel confident sharing their ideas and creations, often campers feel like they can try new things.

Persistence: As they follow instructions to build their Arty Bot, campers may run into challenges and roadblocks. Some steps may require stick-to-it-iveness, but that feeling of success and pride that they have when they complete the task will give them a taste of the power of persistence. Our Coaches and Instructors are there to support campers every step of the way.

Intellectual Property: This activity specializes in helping students explore the importance of intellectual property in an accessible way. By protecting their shoe designs and creating unique product names, participants learn how intellectual property is essential to both marketing and the creative process — particularly as it relates to tracing the creativity back to its source!
