Become a Confident Creator at Design Thinking Project

Behind the NIHF Scenes Program Highlights

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our team of education experts, every summer the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF) recreates the curriculum of our flagship STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program, Camp Invention®. Over the course of our extensive 20-month curriculum development process, we create activities that inspire the next generation of innovators.

Design Thinking Project™ is one of four modules in our all-new 2020 Camp Invention program, Elevate. Read below to learn what your child can look forward to in this creativity-filled program.

Invent the future!

In Design Thinking Project, campers build confidence and learn the value of their creativity. By applying an inventor-informed Design Thinking Process, children collaborate and brainstorm in order to solve real-world problems. Once they identify a problem, they sketch their idea, design their very own logo and construct a prototype they can take home and develop long after camp is over. Along the way, campers will learn how to protect their work and promote their creations using the power of intellectual property.

At the end of the program, children will take home their very own Design Thinking Project Portfolio, which contains:

  • A Design Thinking Project take-home letter and certificate
  • A patent certificate
  • A patent drawings handout
  • Design sketches

Students who attend Camp Invention develop essential 21st-century skills that are needed to thrive in a society that continues to evolve at an ever-increasing rate. These skills include problem solving, perseverance and entrepreneurship. By working in groups to overcome challenges, children have the opportunity to build their confidence as creators who aren’t afraid to take risks and challenge the status quo.

Recent research sponsored by the Burton D. Morgan Foundation supports the effectiveness of Camp Invention and found that attending one week of camp produced statistically significant improvements in creativity, STEM interest and the ability to apply problem-solving techniques.
