Partners in STEM

Sponsor Spotlight: ABB

For more than 50 years, the National Inventors Hall of Fame® has connected generations of innovators. To carry forward our mission to recognize inventors, promote creativity, and advance the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship, our nonprofit relies on the support of philanthropic partners that share our commitment to building a brighter tomorrow. One such partner is ABB – a global technology leader in electrification and automation.

Supporting Innovation and Sustainability

ABB creates solutions that connect engineering know-how and software to optimize how things are manufactured, moved, powered and operated. Building on a history of more than 140 years, ABB drives innovation across areas including electrification, motion, process automation, and robotics and discrete automation.

The company’s ABB Foundation promotes engagement and supports equitable opportunities in the communities in which ABB operates.

“The ABB Foundation exists to improve the communities where ABB employees live and work by giving to organizations that work creatively to affect lasting change in the areas of STEM education, hunger and disaster relief,” said a representative of ABB. “It encourages and multiplies the effects of volunteerism and charity from ABB employees in our communities.”

Since 2015, the ABB Foundation has supported National Inventors Hall of Fame education programs including Camp Invention®, an acclaimed, nationwide K-6 STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) summer camp.

By funding scholarships for underserved children to attend Camp Invention, the foundation provides more children with equitable access to hands-on learning opportunities designed to help them express their creativity, grow their confidence and build the innovative mindset and skills they need to reach their potential.

Promoting Invention Education

The ABB Foundation has steadily increased its support for Camp Invention since 2015 and expanded its support to more regions in 2024.

“Giving back to and supporting the communities where we work and live is very important to ABB. We are happy to provide the Camp Invention experience in under-resourced areas to children who otherwise may not get to attend.”

In addition, ABB employees regularly volunteer at Camp Invention program sites in their communities, actively encouraging young innovators to follow their curiosity, explore new ideas and become confident, creative problem solvers.

“We love the employee engagement that comes with partnering with the National Inventors Hall of Fame and Camp Invention. Our employees really enjoy helping the kids at their STEM camps.”

Camp Invention provides participants with immersive invention education, giving them opportunities to collaborate, investigate STEM concepts, and explore the lessons and stories of National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees through exciting, hands-on challenges. Each summer’s brand-new camp experiences are designed to help children build the I Can Invent® Mindset – the same powerful mindset Inductees have used to develop their world-changing inventions.

“Hands-on and play-based learning increases confidence in children, which in turn increases their creativity,” an ABB representative explained. Additionally, by positioning Hall of Fame Inductees as relatable role models, Camp Invention shows children what they too can achieve.

“Innovation is key for future growth for all industries, and innovative role models are critical for providing a roadmap for children to aspire to and follow.”

Directly inspired and influenced by National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees, each Camp Invention experience empowers children to see themselves as innovators capable of changing the world around them.

“Exposing children to invention education, building their confidence, and building aptitude in using technology and tools is very important for future generations of inventors,” said an ABB representative. “We have found that introducing children to STEM early helps them to develop those skills and to become comfortable with the ever-changing and growing technology field. Sparking their interest in STEM now is an investment in the future workforce, preparing students today for career opportunities tomorrow.”
