Embark on an Eco-Expedition With Penguin Launch

Program Highlights Behind the NIHF Scenes

Penguin Launch is one of four dynamic, hands-on STEM experiences in our all-new Camp Invention® program, where children explore physics, robotics and environmental science with adorable penguin companions.

Every summer, the National Inventors Hall of Fame® inspires creativity and STEM exploration with exciting, open-ended challenges inspired by Inductee stories of innovation. Read on to learn how Penguin Launch transforms curious kids into confident creators while instilling a love for learning.

Become an Eco-Explorer

In Penguin Launch, campers embark on an eco-expedition in Antarctica and become penguin experts! With help from their team’s small but mighty robotic research assistant, campers develop problem-solving strategies to help protect the environment.

To enter penguin colonies undetected, participants investigate the inner mechanics of a Snow-ver — a rover equipped with a robotic penguin that can roll and glide across snowy and icy surfaces. As children learn more about the challenges facing their sociable friends, they’ll use magnets to lift and move iron filings representing the microplastic pollution that must be cleaned up from their habitat. Along the way, they’ll uncover their unique role in protecting our ecosystem.

With no limits to their imagination, campers channel their inner inventor as they draw inspiration from penguin flippers to design their own DIY launchers. By exploring the science of physics and air pressure, students find the best strategy for launching their stuffed penguins on an epic, planet-saving mission.

Developing an I Can Invent Mindset

As curious kids transform into eco-explorers on a research mission in the frozen landscape of Antarctica, they’ll learn how innovative thinking can support their assignment. From field research to engineering design, campers tackle versatile STEM challenges inspired by stories and lessons from real-world inventors to help them develop an innovative mindset. Penguin Launch focuses on the following components of the I Can Invent® Mindset:

  • STEM: Campers discover STEM concepts through hands on exploration of physics, biology and engineering design as they uncover the geography of Antarctica. This hands-on experience packs science, creativity and environmental awareness into one waddling journey through the snow.

  • Confidence: Campers grow their confidence by designing a successful penguin launcher and even write compelling eco-messages to advocate for the planet.

  • Persistence: Children develop the important trait of persistence as they explore robotics, compete in challenges, and test and improve their prototypes.
